Atlanta CARES Back to School Mentor Rally

There are over 2000 children on a waitlist in hopes of being matched with a mentor. If you are interested in providing social, emotional, and educational support to an under-resourced Atlanta youth, please consider attending this event and signing up to be a mentor.
Decatur Makers’ Bio Mondays

Bio Mondays are for those interested in doing hands-on Do It Yourself (DIY) biology activities, seeing talks about biology, or having discussions about biology. Bio Mondays also provides an opportunity to receive safety training and training on equipment in a lab setting. This event is targeted at ages 14-18. Note that it costs $5. Girls Who Code Club

Swamp Stroll at Newman Wetlands Center

Join the staff of Newman Wetlands Center to take a themed, guided walk along the boardwalk trail. The walk will be an hour, and you will learn about the history of the nature and humans of their site, all while being surrounded by the beauty of nature. The event is free, so sign up here!
The Maker Station’s 3D Printing 101
The Maker Station: 869 Pickens Industrial Drive NE, Marietta, GA 30062; 9/4/19 from 6:30PM-8:30PM
This introductory class on 3D printing will use the Taz 6 and Taz Mini to learn about filament types and uses for them. You will learn the basics of using the printers and a crash course on the basics of the slicer software Cura. This event requires a $20 donation for non-members of The Maker Station. Grady Stroke and Neuroscience Symposium

This event has previous included over 200 top professional nurses from around the area and other health care professionals. Attendees will learn about advancements in stroke care, progressive treatments, and ongoing clinical trials. Smith Gilbert Gardens’ Guided Bird Walk

Smith Gilbert Gardens is home to dozens of bird species, while also being a flyover zone for many migrating birds. Take part in the observing and hearing birds with the expert birding guides, and learn about the birds that live all around you! Zoo Atlanta: World Gorilla Day

Be a part of the 3rd-annual event highlighting gorillas and their habitats. See one of the largest western lowland gorilla populations in all of North America. Talk with the Zoo educators about the efforts of the Zoo to save gorilla species and care for the individuals at the Zoo. Zoo Atlanta: Educator Extravaganza: Fall

This event will provide teachers with activities, refreshments, and networking opportunities. Teachers will be able to learn about the educational programs that the Zoo has to offer, see the Zoo animal species after-hours, and hear a Keeper Talk. There will also be a raffle to win free programs and other prizes for your classroom. Note that this will be specifically for teachers, and will not be able to extend to significant others. YWCA’s 2019 Forum on Race and Gender

This conversation will aim to foster thought-provoking dialogue and provide skills to attends that can be used to positively impact their own communities. Key skills will be developed to proactively identify unconscious biases along the lines of race and gender, and start conversations that can change the narrative. The keynote speaker this year will be Sharon “Nyota” Tucker. Although this event is not directly related to STEM, understand that STEM is composed of people and constant conversations; knowing how to talk with people from different backgrounds is as important in STEM as it is in life. Georgia Bio’s Innovation Summit

The Innovation Summit draws over 500 CEOs, senior executives, scientists, and public policy officials from around Georgia and throughout the nation. There will be poster sessions and speakers covering topics from basic research to industry manufacturing. NSTA Out-of-School Science Web Seminar

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) is hosting a web seminar to highlight the importance of learning about science outside of the classroom. Learning about STEM outside of school can make the “real-world” examples in a classroom seem more relevant to students’ own lives. Dennis Schatz, a longtime expert on out-of-school STEM learning and president of NSTA, will be presenting how out-of-school learning is important for developing students’ interest in STEM, and ways of connect in- and out-of-school teaching. STEM/ STEAM Forum

The STEM/ STEAM Forum is an event to bring together elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the area. The event focuses on improving STEM education for youth through learning new ways to teach STEM in the classroom, raising awareness of job opportunities in STEM fields for students, and providing grants to local STEM teachers. STEAMIFY
Augusta University, Summerville Campus: 2500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904; 10/26/19 from 9:00AM-6:00PM
This event is a design-based problem-solving competition for students in grades 4-8 that will integrate engineering and art. The competition includes a long question that must be answered before the event (and then brought to the event) and a spontaneous question that will be provided and answered at the event. The event is split into topics including: dance, theater, visual arts, spoken word, debate, engineering, aeronautical engineering, and rocketry. STEAM Series: Zoo Atlanta

This series is focused on enhancing STEAM classroom curriculums by providing information to educators. Check out the brand-new African Savanna exhibit and learn how to way to integrate conservation issues into the classroom. Through topics of ecology, technology, math, art, and more, this event will teach educators about the conservation initiatives, animal care, and teacher resources at Zoo Atlanta. Fernbank Museum: Adventures in Science

Learn about what it is like to be a scientist by taking part in one-on-one discussions with scientists and community volunteers. There will also be hands-on activities and more. Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)
Anaheim, California 11/13/19 – 11/16/19
This event is the largest professional conference for minorities interested pursing advanced training in STEM fields. The event averages around 3,300 people including undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, faculty, program directors, and administrators. The conferences aims to empower minority students to received advanced STEM education, network with others in STEM from around the nation, and provide educators with resources to increase the success of students. There will be exhibits from many graduate school programs, government agencies, foundations, and STEM organizations. STEAM Series: Michael C. Carlos Museum: Materiality & Invention
